Game of Thrones‘ Kit Harrington returns to HBO in Gunpowder, the new three-part historical miniseries that will complete its run next week on BBC One in the UK.

September means the new fall TV season, and this month brings 16 new programs from Great Britain, Australia, and Canada to stateside cable channels and SVOD services.

Summer’s here and the time is right for tuning into new and returning crime thrillers, documentaries, mysteries, period dramas, and sci-fi series, plus a competition show, from the UK, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand.

April showers bring May flowers, and this month’s British TV program premieres bring hours of viewing enjoyment with the return of midwives, the arrival of alien-battling teens, and more to telly.

A Happy 2017 to you! Without further ado, let’s get to the shows that will help us ring in the new year and give us hours of fabulous British, Aussie, Kiwi, Canadian, and Irish TV entertainment.

By my count, 215 new programs and program seasons from the UK, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, and Canada premiered stateside in 2016. Of them, here are my picks for the best 20 that were brand-spanking-new to the US.
