For this natural history documentary, Scottish cinematographer Gordon Buchanan travels into Canada’s Rocky Mountains to observe wild horses preparing for winter and protecting their foals from predators. Wild Horses, the Rockies and Me premieres in North America on Wednesday, July 1, on BBC Select.

Hammerhead Sharks Up Close with Bertie Gregory (UK-US)

Kicking off National Geographic’s 14th annual SharkFest is this new documentary special presented by National Geographic Explorer Bertie Gregory (Animals Up Close with Bertie Gregory), who dives into Mexico’s Pacific waters in search of one of the ocean’s most iconic predators: the hammerhead shark. Once abundant in these seas, hammerhead numbers have plummeted, making sightings increasingly rare. Bertie investigates what’s driving the hammerhead decline, and how protected waters offer hope for this shark’s future.

Hammerhead Sharks Up Close with Bertie Gregory premieres in the US on Sunday, July 5, at 9pm ET, on National Geographic, with streaming available on Disney+ and Hulu.

Inspector Ellis: Season 2 (UK)

The new season of this crime drama opens with DCI Ellis (Sharon D Clarke, Mr Loverman, Lost Boys & Fairies) and DS Harper (Andrew Gower, The Winter King, Carnival Row, Outlander) called in to investigate the suspicious death of a well-respected businessman in the rural village of Ashenham. As the local police focus their attention on one young suspect, DCI Ellis must see beyond old grudges to catch the real killer. But she soon finds herself at the center of multiple crises and under pressure from all sides when tensions in Ashenham boil over. Then, after a key suspect vanishes and dark secrets resurface, she uncovers the truth and the tragedy buried in the town’s complex past.

In the second two-part story, DCI Ellis and DS Harper take on the case of a female university student killed in a scaffolding accident at a local stone works in Elmsly. This docuseries, which delves into the four coordinated bombings that took place in London on July 7, 2005, features the investigating detectives, attack survivors, and the victims’ families. The London Bombings premieres in North America as a four-episode binge on Tuesday, July 7, on BBC Select.

Trying: Season 5 (UK)

Escape to the Country: Season 33 (UK)

In this reality series, country living experts help city slickers achieve their dream of quitting the rate race for the peace of the countryside by finding what will hopefully be their ideal idyllic rural retreat. The Salisbury Poisonings: A Spy Next Door (US-UK)

This feature-length documentary examines the 2018 chemical weapon attack in the UK, which sparked a global diplomatic crisis and exposed the hidden mechanics of modern state-sponsored espionage. It begins when former Russian intelligence officer Sergei Skripal and his daughter, Yulia, collapse on a park bench in the cathedral city of Salisbury, England. Pompeii: Out of Time with Tom Hiddleston (UK)

Tom Hiddleston (The Night Manager, Loki) presents this docudrama series about Pompeii, in which scripted drama and investigative documentary storytelling are blended together to transport viewers to ancient Rome in the hours before and during the eruption of Mount Vesuvius. Guided by a team of archaeologists, historians, geologists, and disaster experts, Hiddleston uncovers remarkable evidence that reveals many of the people caught up in the disaster had the chance to survive.

The three-part program also shares the stories of real people that challenge long-held assumptions about Pompeii and its final hours. Gone (UK)

Adapted from the true-crime book To Hunt a Killer by Julie Mackay and Robert Murphy, this mystery-crime drama series stars David Morrissey (Sherwood, The Long Shadow, Britannia) as Michael Polly, a headmaster, and Eve Myles (We Hunt Together, Keeping Faith, Torchwood) as DS Annie Cassidy. The character of DS Cassidy is based on a real-life former cop, Detective Sergeant (later Superintendent) Julie Mackay, whose cold case investigation inspired this television series.

Gone revolves around Michael Polly, whose wife, Sarah, seemingly vanished into thin air. With her car keys still in the dish by the front door and her mobile phone still charging under the bed, it’s as if the music teacher simply walked out on her family. Minutes have turned into hours, and hours into days, but still her family has heard nothing from Sarah. Concerned, Michael goes to the police station, where he speaks with DS Annie Cassidy and demands that she finds out what has happened to his wife. Cassidy promises that she will, but something in her gut tells her he is responsible.

This historical thriller tells the true story of the investigation into the terrorist attack on Pan Am Flight 103, which exploded over the small Scottish town of Lockerbie on December 21, 1988, killing 270 people. This was and remains the deadliest act of terrorism on British soil. Conducted jointly with US law enforcement, it was the largest murder investigation in the history of Scottish policing. The series is based on the testimony of those who were there and the families’ quest for justice.

Fightland (US-UK)

Set against the backdrop of London’s boxing scene, this new crime drama revolves around British-born boxer Duke Kilroy (Howard Charles, Whitstable Pearl, The Musketeers), who becomes the world heavyweight champion on the same night that a vicious assault leaves his brother, Calvin, dead. Duke is devastated, and his reaction in the aftermath costs him eight years in a stateside prison.
