The first season of Manhunt, which follows the true story of the police investigation and ultimately the arrest of serial killer Levi Bellfield, was the highest-rated new UK drama of 2019.

In the second season, titled Manhunt: The Night Stalker, BAFTA and SAG Award-winning actor Martin Clunes (Doc Martin) reprises his role as London Metropolitan Police detective DCI Colin Sutton, who was the Senior Investigating Officer (SIO) on another case that made headlines in the UK — for 17 years.

Based on the diaries of now-former DCI Colin Sutton (read my interview with him here), Manhunt: The Night Stalker centers on the case of a notorious burglar and serial rapist who, between 1992 and 2009, left thousands of elderly people in Southeast London living in fear. The drama explores how Sutton joined the case and helped to solve it in a matter of weeks, taking an incredibly dangerous criminal off the streets.

With an unknown burglar and rapist having evaded capture for so many years, DCI Colin Sutton is asked in 2009 to review the case. Sutton works with Detective Superintendent Simon Morgan and the dedicated “Operation Minstead” team, and proposes a strategy he believes can catch the culprit — one of Britain’s most prolific rapists. The plan is to focus a vast surveillance operation around a key area of southeast London, deploying scores of additional officers to invisibly saturate the target area on a nightly basis. With the Night Stalker becoming ever more brazen, the clock starts ticking on Sutton’s strategy…

Returning to the series are Claudie Blakley (Lark Rise to Candleford), who plays Colin’s wife, Louise, and Stephen Wight (Bluestone 42), who plays DC Clive Grace.

Joining the cast are Matthew Gravelle (Broadchurch) as DI Nathan Eason, Matt Bardock (The Coroner) as Det. Supt. Simon Morgan, Beth Goddard (The Scarlet Pimpernel) as DS Cathy Rook, Diveen Henry (No Offence) as DC Patricia Henry, Steve Nicolson (River) as DC Kenny Munro, Sule Rimi (Death in Paradise) as DS Neville Hylton, Guy Williams (Indian Summers) as DCS Hamish Campbell, and David Witts (EastEnders) as DC Adam Spier.

A production of Buffalo Pictures, Manhunt: The Night Stalker was created by Colin Sutton (The Real Manhunter) and Ed Whitmore (Silent Witness, Rillington Place, Waking the Dead). The executive producers are Philippa Braithwaite and Ed Whitmore, the producer is Jo Willett, and the co-producer is Evie Bergson-Korn. Marc Evans is the director.

Manhunt: The Night Stalker, an Acorn TV Original series, premieres in the US and Canada on Monday, October 18, exclusively on Acorn TV. New episodes will debut weekly on Mondays through November 8.
