Well, if all this gorgeous spring weather wasn’t enough to put a bounce in my step, then knowing that new episodes of Inspector Lewis will soon light up my television screen most certainly has been!

Yes, mum. Kevin Whately and Laurence Fox are returning to PBS as DI Robert “Robbie” Lewis and DS James Hatahway for the new season of “Masterpiece: Mystery!” and the sixth and final season (say it ain’t so!) of Inspector Lewis.

Inspector LewisSince the days of Morse, we’ve come to realize that Oxford isn’t quite the academic haven that one would have us believe. A bastion of learning and knowledge, yes, but one that has had its fair share of murders and mayhem over the past five seasons of Inspector Lewis. And Season Six is no exception.

With three new episodes come three new cases that involve several murders each.

In “Down Among the Fearful,” Inspector Lewis and DS Hathaway investigate the murder of a psychic and discover that the victim was actually an Oxford psychology research fellow. As they probe further, the truth behind the psychic’s double life unravels, revealing numerous suspects.

DS Hathaway is away on holiday in “The Ramblin’ Boy,” and Inspector Lewis is assigned a new partner to investigate the discovery of an elderly man’s body in a field. Finding that the man had already been embalmed, the inquiry leads to a funeral home and those connected to it, including one of Lewis’ former colleagues. Peter Davison (The Last Detective, Doctor Who) guest stars.

And in “Intelligent Design,” Lewis and Hathaway are called in to examine the brutal death of a chemistry professor who had recently been released from prison. There may be a connection to the discovery of a murdered Oxford student reported lost for 15 years. As more casualties and suspects emerge, Lewis considers his future on the force. Edward Fox (Ghandi, Foyle’s War) guest stars.

Also returning for this final season of Inspector Lewis are Clare Holman as forensic pathologist Dr. Laura Hobson and Rebecca Front as Lewis’ and Hathaway’s “mum” Chief Superintendent Jean Innocent.

Inspector Lewis: Season Six premieres on PBS on 16 June 2013 and airs each Sunday through 30 June from 9:00-10:30PM Eastern. (Check your local listings.)

I love this series. Sad that this will be the final season. One can hope that it continues.
