Yesterday was Remembrance Day in the British Commonwealth and Veterans Day in the U.S., the latter of which is a Federal holiday today. Regardless of the day of the week, let us salute all of the veterans who have served to protect us.

In British TV, several characters who are veterans come to mind, including Jackson Brodie (Jason Isaacs) of Case Histories; Robert, Earl of Grantham (Hugh Bonneville), Mr. Bates (Brendan Coyle), Matthew Crawley (Dan Stevens), footmen Thomas (Rob James-Collier) and William (Thomas Howes), and Mr. Lang the valet (Cal Macaninch) of Downton Abbey; and John Watson (Martin Freeman) of Sherlock.

All of the characters returned from their tours of duty with battle scars, except for Lord Grantham (that we know of), from physical injuries to PTSD. One — William — died as a result of his wounds.

Let us remember, then, those who have served us well in the armed forces.
