That’s right, folks. BBC America has confirmed that the Cybermen will once again be menacing the universe when Doctor Who returns in Spring 2013.

These iconic villains will appear in an episode directed by Stephen Woolfenden and written by acclaimed sci-fi author Neil Gaiman, whose previous Doctor Who episode, “The Doctor’s Wife,” garnered him a Hugo Award in back in September. When asked if the new episode would be scary, Gaiman replied, “I hope so.”

Doing battle with the Cybermen will be series star Matt Smith as The Doctor and Jenna-Louise Coleman as his new companion. But that’s not all. The episode also co-stars Warwick Davis (Life’s Too Short, Harry Potter), Tamzin Outhwaite (EastEnders, Hotel Babylon) and Jason Watkins (Being Human, Twenty Twelve) as a band of misfits on a mysterious planet.

Lead Writer and Executive Producer Steven Moffat shared this about the metal and mortal enemies: “Cybermen were always the monsters that scared me the most! Not just because they were an awesome military force, but because sometimes they could be sleek and silver and right behind you without you even knowing.” He added, “And with one of the all-time classic monsters returning, and a script from one of our finest novelists, it’s no surprise we have attracted such stellar names as Tamzin, Jason and Warwick.”

The Cybermen debuted in 1966 in the classic “The Tenth Planet” episode starring William Hartnell as The Doctor, and last appeared in 2011’s “Closing Time.” Through the sixteen episodes (list below) they have been in to date, the Cybermen have proven consistent in their attempts to terrorize the Time Lord, invade our planet. and destroy humanity.

Doctor Who returns to BBC America on December 25 for the Christmas Special, and is back for a run of eight episodes in Spring, 2013.
