It is definitely happy dance time for Sherlock fans. Not only do we have the title for the final episode of the three that comprise Series 3, we now have confirmation that there will indeed be a Series 4!
(Happy dance, happy dance!)
As noted in the 15 July post, Sherlock showrunner Steven Moffat and producers Mark Gatiss and Sue Vertue were on a panel at San Diego Comic-Con last week, when they revealed not one but two juicy tidbits. (No, one of them wasn’t how Sherlock survived the fall off the roof. Knowing it would be a spoiler to end all spoilers, or is that just me?)
So, here’s what we do have:
Episode 1: “The Empty Hearse” — Written by Mark Gatiss, this installment is loosely based on the Conan Doyle story The Adventure of the Empty House, in which it is revealed how Sherlock faked his death.
Episode 2: “The Sign of Three” — Penned by Stephen Thompson, this episode is a play on Conan Doyle’s novel The Sign of the Four, in which Watson meets (and eventually marries) Mary Morstan. Hmm, methinks Martin Freeman’s real-life amour, Amanda Abbingdon (Case Histories, Mr. Selfridge), who recently joined the cast, could play Watson’s new love.
And now… Episode 3: “His Last Vow” — Another gem, I expect, from Steven Moffat, whose writing here is based on Sir Arthur’s Sherlock spy story His Last Bow. The thing is, Sherlock retires after the original story concludes…
Which brings me to the news from Sue Vertue, who announced at SDCC that…
“There is definitely going to be a fourth series.”
Huzzah!
