Hulu released today several first-look photos from Season 2 of its hit Original drama series, A Thousand Blows, along with an overview of the new season’s plot.
Created by Oscar® nominee and multi-award winner Steven Knight (Peaky Blinders, House of Guinness, Rogue Heroes), the hit period drama A Thousand Blows will soon be back on our screens with a new season. (Hooray!) As Season 2 is a continuation of the Season 1 story, here’s a quick recap:
Set in the 1880s in London’s East End, and inspired by the true-life stories of a group of characters battling for survival on its mean streets, A Thousand Blows revolves around three main characters: Mary Carr (Erin Doherty, The Crown, Les Misérables, Chloe), the leader of the notorious all-female criminal gang known as The Forty Elephants; Henry “Sugar” Goodson (Stephen Graham, Adolescence, Bodies, Boiling Point), a criminal kingpin and dangerous bare-knuckle boxer; and Jamaican immigrant Hezekiah Moscow (Malachi Kirby, Wicked Little Letters, Devils, Black Mirror), who wants to be a lion tamer. (Really.)
As fate would have it, Hezekiah’s dream is shattered when he learns the truth about the zoo keeper. Out of necessity, he dives into East London’s criminal underbelly, where he becomes party to Mary’s money-making schemes and gets embroiled in an intense rivalry with Sugar that spills out beyond the boxing ring.
Opening a year after the Season 1 finale, Season 2 finds Hezekiah is a shadow of his former self, while Sugar, estranged from his family, is drinking himself to death. Meanwhile, Mary blows back into Wapping with her loyal sidekick, Alice Diamond (Darci Shaw, This City Is Ours, The Bay), to reassemble her gang and reclaim her crown. As always, Mary has a plan, one that involves all those she holds dearest. And this time, it’s riskier than ever…
In addition to the series’ three leads, others of the returning cast include James Nelson-Joyce (The Gold), Hannah Walters (Boiling Point), Nadia Albina (Doctor Who), Morgan Hilaire, Jemma Carlton (Lockerbie: A Search for Truth), Caoilfhionn Dunne (Industry), Jason Tobin (Warrior), Susan Lynch (The Change), Daniel Mays (Lynley), Gary Lewis (Vigil), Aliyah Odoffin (Everything I Know About Love), and Robert Glenister (Hustle). Joining them in Season 2 are Ned Dennehy (Peaky Blinders) and Catherine McCormack (Temple).
Created, written, and executive produced by Steven Knight, Season 2 of A Thousand Blows is executive produced by Stephen Graham and Hannah Walters for Matriarch Productions, Damian Keogh and Kate Lewis for The Story Collective, Tom Miller and Sam Myer for Water & Power Productions, and Jonny Richards for Disney+ EMEA. Award-winning broadcaster and historian Professor David Olusoga serves as Executive Producer on the series with Tom Miller as Series Producer, with Stephen Haren and Charlotte Robinson producing and Carolyn Parry-Jones co-producing.
