Adapted from Julia Whelan’s novel My Oxford Year, this romantic comedy-drama film stars Sofia Carson (The Life List, Carry-On, Pretty Little Liars: The Perfectionists) as Anna, an ambitious young American woman who heads off to Oxford, England, to fulfill her childhood dream of studying at the University of Oxford. Empire: The World’s First Superpower with David Olusoga premieres in the US as a three-episode binge on Monday, August 4, on PBS Passport and the PBS Documentaries Prime Video Channel.

Pompeii: The New Dig: House of Treasures (UK)

The docuseries Pompeii: The New Dig made global headlines with its dazzling discoveries when it debuted last year. Now, we have a brand-new episode of the series, titled “House of Treasures,” which follows the latest revelations as the biggest archaeological dig in Pompeii for a generation finds even more remarkable treasures: a woman with pearl earrings, elaborate mosaics, and a private spa and gym amongst the new discoveries. The film, told through the drama of the dig and stylized fresco-inspired animations, contrasts the luxurious life of the city’s wealthiest citizens with the horror faced by the residents as Vesuvius erupted in AD 79.

In the Footsteps of Killers: Season 3 (UK)

In the new season of this true-crime docuseries, actress Emilia Fox (Silent Witness) and Britain’s top criminologist, Professor David Wilson, attempt to solve Britain’s most heinous murders. In the Footsteps of Killers: Season 3 premieres in North America as a six-episode binge on Friday, August 8, exclusively on BritBox.

Outlander: Blood of My Blood (US)

This Outlander prequel series centers on the parallel love stories of Jamie Fraser’s parents, Ellen MacKenzie (Harriet Slater, Pennyworth, Belgravia: The Next Chapter) and Brian Fraser (Jamie Roy, Condor’s Nest, Flowers and Honey), and Claire Randall’s parents, Julia Moriston (Hermione Corfield, The Road Dance, We Hunt Together) and Henry Beauchamp (Jeremy Irvine, War Horse, Dalgliesh). The show follows the two couples as they defy the forces that seek to tear them apart — with the story of Ellen and Brian taking place in the early 18th-century Scottish Highlands, while that of Julia and Henry is set in WWI England.

Stolen: Heist of the Century (UK)

This true-crime documentary tells the story of the world’s greatest diamond heist. For the first time, the Antwerp detectives who cracked the case and the alleged criminal mastermind assemble to give a blow-by-blow account of what really happened and reveal the secrets of the heist.

On the morning of February 17, 2003, detectives from Antwerp’s infamous “Diamond Squad” were called to investigate the brazen nighttime robbery of an allegedly impregnable vault in the middle of the City of Diamonds. It is estimated that between 100 million and half a billion dollars’ worth of diamonds were stolen — and have never been found. An ingenious gang of master jewel thieves from Italy, known as “The School of Turin” were behind the audacious heist. Now, after more than twenty years, the world will finally learn how they pulled it off.

Irish Blood (CA-US-IE)

Alicia Silverstone (Clueless, Bugonia) stars in this new mystery-crime drama series as Fiona Fox, a hotshot Los Angeles lawyer whose path in life was forged by her father, Declan (Jason O’Mara, Smother, The Man In The High Castle), who seemingly abandoned her and her mother on her tenth birthday. After years of channeling anger toward him, to the benefit of her litigious clients, a message from Declan sends Fiona to Ireland.

Once there, she learns key truths about her father as well as a family that doesn’t know she exists — and that the story of abandonment that has shaped her entire life was a lie. A lie intended to protect her and her mother from her father’s shady business dealings. Now, Fiona resolves to uncover the full truth about her father and reconnect with the parent she only thought she knew.

The six-part murder mystery costars Wendy Crewson (We Were Liars, Tracker), Dearbhla Molloy (Wild Mountain Thyme, Rendezvous), Simone Kirby (His Dark Materials, Kneecap), Ruth Codd (The Fall of the House of Usher, The Dry), and Leonardo Taiwo (Wheel of Time, Ant-Man & The Wasp).

Love Is Blind: UK: Season 2 (UK)

This reality series returns with a new group of UK- and Ireland-based singles who’ve signed up for a less-conventional approach to modern dating: choosing someone to marry without ever meeting them. Over several weeks, the newly-engaged couples will move in together, plan their wedding, and find out if their physical connection matches their strong emotional bond developed in the Pods. Sister Boniface Mysteries: Season 4 (UK)

In the new season of this 1960s-set mystery series, Sister Boniface (Lorna Watson, Father Brown), the wine-making, moped-riding, crime-solving nun, investigates more ugly deeds in the beautiful surroundings of the quaint Cotswold village of Great Slaughter. A killer scarecrow stalks the streets, all the townswomen call a general strike, and the police embark on something called “team building.” Meanwhile, Sister Boniface is looking forward to a wholesome weekend away with the sisters, only to be confronted with yet another murder. Sister Boniface Mysteries: Season 4, a BritBox Original, premieres in North America on Tuesday, August 19, exclusively on BritBox. New episodes will drop weekly through October 7.

Hostage (UK)

Suranne Jones (Scott & Bailey, Gentleman Jack, Vigil) leads the cast of this new political thriller series, in which she plays British Prime Minister Abigail Dalton, with Julie Delpy (On the Verge, Before Sunrise) costarring as French President Vivienne Toussaint. On the verge of a historic meeting between the two heads of state, PM Dalton receives nightmarish news: Her husband, Alex (Ashley Thomas, The Ipcress File, The Serpent Queen), has been taken hostage, and the kidnappers are demanding that she resign immediately if she wants to see him alive again. President Toussaint has her own problems to deal with, as she’s being blackmailed. As the two leaders face unimaginable choices, they are forced to work together, despite their fierce rivalry and diametrically-opposed politics, to uncover the plot that threatens their political futures as well as their and others’ lives.

The Marlow Murder Club: Season 2 (UK)

In the new season of this mystery series, Judith (Samantha Bond, Downton Abbey, Home Fires), Becks (Cara Horgan, The Sandman, Grantchester), and Suzie (Jo Martin, Doctor Who, Dreaming Whilst Black) are called back into action when a series of new, unsettling crimes befall the residents of the idyllic town of Marlow. From a seemingly impossible murder inside a locked study, to a murdered man with no connection to Marlow and a shocking murder at the local sailing club, there’s no rest for this sleuthing trio.

Opening six months after that shocking Season 3 finale, the new season of this mystery series finds the Cambridge detectives continuing to tackle complex and dangerous cases while also welcoming DC Chloe Highsmith (Rhian Blundell, Vampire Academy) to the team. Jasper (Ben Miller, Death in Paradise, Bridgerton), though, is hiding in his lectures to avoid the police at all costs. But his therapist, Helena (Juliet Stevenson, Truly Madly Deeply, Place of Execution), helps him to face back up to his police work.

Unforgotten: Season 6 (UK)

The new season of this fan-favorite mystery series finds DCI Jess James (Sinéad Keenan, Little Boy Blue, Showtrial), DI Sunny Khan (Sanjeev Bhaskar, The Indian Doctor, Goodness Gracious Me), and their team investigating the discovery of a dismembered body in Whitney Marsh. To uncover the truth, they delve into the lives of four suspects — a university lecturer, a TV news correspondent, a refugee working as an interpreter, and an autistic man caring for his home-bound mother — each of whom has a history with the victim.

Playing Nice (UK)

Set against a sweeping Cornish landscape, this drama thriller follows two couples who discover that their toddlers were switched at birth in a hospital mix-up and now face a horrifying dilemma: Do they keep the sons they have raised and loved, or reclaim their biological child? Living a waking nightmare, Pete (James Norton, Little Women, Happy Valley) and Maddie (Niamh Algar, Mary & George, Suspect) are jettisoned into the world of the other couple, Miles (James McArdle, Andor, Mare of Easttown) and Lucy (Jessica Brown Findlay, The Flatshare, The Outcast). Kidnapped (UK)

In this ripped-from-the-headlines true-crime thriller, British model Chloe Ayling (Nadia Parkes, The Spanish Princess, Domina) thinks she’s landed a dream photo shoot in Milan. But the dream quickly turns into a nightmare when she’s drugged and kidnapped by a man who claims to work for a shadowy crime syndicate. With her life on the line, Chloe miraculously manages to escape, but is met with suspicion upon her return home, becoming the target of a relentless media storm accusing her of faking her kidnapping for fame.

Happy Valley: Season 1 (UK)

Sarah Lancashire (Black Doves, Last Tango in Halifax) stars in this compelling crime thriller as Catherine Cawood, a police sergeant in a small town where drunkards, drug addicts, and teenage pregnancies are a way of life. In Season 1, her world is shaken when the man she thinks is responsible for her daughter’s death — Tommy Lee Royce (James Norton, Playing Nice) — is released from prison. Meanwhile, accountant Kevin Weatherill (Steve Pemberton, Inside No. 9), desperate to send his daughters to private school, asks his boss for a raise. In Season 2, Catherine makes a gruesome discovery: a dead body, whose injuries bear a striking similarity to a string of other murders, suggesting a serial killer is on the loose. And in Season 3, Catherine discovers the remains of a gangland murder victim, sparking a chain of events that leads her straight back to murderer and rapist Tommy Lee Royce. Last Tango in Halifax: Seasons 1-5 (UK)

This BAFTA-winning, viewer-favorite comedy-drama series about romance and second chances follows childhood sweethearts Alan (Derek Jacobi, Good Omens) and Celia (Anne Reid, The Sixth Commandment), both widowed and in their 70s, who fall for each other all over again when they are reunited on the internet after nearly 60 years.
