NATIONAL PREMIERES
Shardlake (international)
Based on the novel Dissolution, the first title in the late C.J. Sansom’s internationally-popular “Matthew Shardlake Tudor Mystery” books, this four-part period drama is an eerie whodunit adventure, set in 16th-century England during the dissolution of the monasteries. The story follows Matthew Shardlake (Arthur Hughes, Help), a lawyer sent by Henry VIII’s right-hand man, Thomas Cromwell (Sean Bean, Snowpiercer), to investigate the murder of one of his commissioners at a monastery in the remote town of Scarnsea.
The commissioner was gathering evidence to close the monastery, and it is now imperative for Cromwell’s own political survival that Shardlake both solves the murder and closes the monastery. Cromwell leaves Shardlake in no doubt that failure is not an option, and insists that his henchman, Jack Barak (Anthony Boyle, Masters of the Air), accompanies Shardlake to Scarnsea. There, the duo are met with hostility, suspicion, and paranoia by the monks who fear for their future and seemingly will stop at nothing to preserve their order.
Shardlake, a Hulu Original, premieres in the US on Wednesday, May 1, exclusively on Hulu. It premieres globally on the same date on Disney+.

The Contestant (UK)
This documentary feature, which had its world premiere at the 2023 Toronto International Film Festival, tells the incredible true story of aspiring comedian Tomoaki Hamatsu, nicknamed Nasubi, who unwittingly became a reality TV sensation and the most famous television personality in Japan — all without his knowledge or consent.
In 1998, Nasubi thought he was attending an audition when Japanese TV producer Toshio Tsuchiya got him to take part in a challenge. Tsuchiya led Nasubi into a small room, ordered him to strip naked, and left him with a stack of magazines. Nasubi’s task was to fill out contest coupons in order to win what he needed to survive — food, clothing, appliances, etc. — until he reached the prize goal of one million yen, all while he was alone and cut off from all contact with his family and the world, except for occasional interactions with Tsuchiya. Although Nasubi could have left at any time, he stayed for 15 months, fiercely determined to complete his mission. What he didn’t realize was that his experiences were being broadcast to more than 15 million people each week in a TV show called Denpa Shonen: A Life in Prizes.
Featuring archival footage and interviews with Nasubi, Tsuchiya, and others close to them, The Contestant, a Hulu Original, premieres in the US on Thursday, May 2, exclusively on Hulu.

One day, he meets Gita when tattooing her prisoner number on her arm. They experience love at first sight, and so begins their courageous, unforgettable, and human story. Under constant guard from volatile Nazi SS officer Baretzki (Jonas Nay, Deutschland 83/86/89), Lale and Gita become determined to keep each other alive.
Around 60 years later, Lale (Harvey Keitel, Reservoir Dogs, Smoke) meets novice writer Heather Morris (Melanie Lynskey, Yellowjackets, Mrs. America). Recently widowed, Lale finds the courage to tell her, and through her the world, his story. In recounting it to Heather, Lale, now in his 80s, faces the traumatic ghosts of his youth and relives his memories of falling in love in the most horrific of places.
