Here’s a quick rundown on three new British TV series that will be shown in the US (two definitely, more than likely for the third) in the near and distant future.
Adult Material
HBO Max will be the US home for Adult Material, the four-part Channel 4 drama about a woman’s life working in the adult entertainment industry. It stars BAFTA Film Awards nominee Hayley Squires (I, Daniel Blake, Collateral, The Miniaturist) as Hayley Burrows, a single working mother of three children who supports her family by working as porn star Jolene Dollar, until an incident prompts her to quit the business. Dalgliesh
Acorn TV and Channel 5 have commissioned Dalgliesh, a new detective drama starring Bertie Carvel (Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell, Doctor Foster) as the enigmatic Inspector Adam Dalgliesh. The series is based on three of P.D. James’s international best-selling “Inspector Dalgliesh Mysteries” novels, and will consist of three two-part, hour-long films, each with its own unique setting and cast.
The series starts in the mid-’70s and follows the detective’s career to the present day as he solves unusual murders and reveals buried secrets. Dalgliesh investigates the murder of a young student at nursing school Nightingale House in “Shroud for a Nightingale,” a series of mysterious deaths at and around a care home on the Dorset coast in “The Black Tower,” and the double murder of a homeless pensioner and a Minister of the Crown at St. Matthews Church Paddington in “A Taste for Death.”
Barring another coronavirus-related lockdown, production will begin in December in Northern Ireland.
Dalgliesh will have its world premiere exclusively on Acorn TV in North America, New Zealand, and Australia, and be broadcast on Channel 5 in the United Kingdom, in 2021. Stay tuned for updates.
The Yorkshire Ripper
With the success of true-crime dramas Des (currently streaming in the US on Sundance Now) and The Murders at White House Farm (available stateside on HBO Max), ITV has commissioned The Yorkshire Ripper (w/t). The drama will depict one of the most notorious and shocking serial killer cases in the world: the desperate hunt for Peter Sutcliffe, dubbed the Yorkshire Ripper. Between October 1975 and January 1981, police undertook the biggest manhunt in British criminal history, which involved more than a thousand officers and changed the way the British police worked forever.
What began as a series of murders on sex workers in Leeds soon spread across the whole of the North of England to women of all backgrounds living in different neighborhoods. By the late 1970s, Sutcliffe had terrorized Britain, creating a national obsession of finding out the killer’s true identity. And by the time he was caught in 1981, he had killed thirteen women and attempted to kill seven others, and was ultimately sentenced to 20 concurrent sentences of life imprisonment.
Based on Michael Bilton’s highly-praised book, Wicked Beyond Belief: The Hunt for the Yorkshire Ripper, the six-part true-crime drama will be penned by George Kay (Criminal) and focus on the lives of the Sutcliffe’s victims, the loved ones they left behind, and the everlasting toll the investigation took on the detectives who led it.
