NATIONAL PREMIERES

Miss Austen (UK)

Based on Miss Austen: A Novel of the Austen Sisters, Gill Hornby’s best-selling novel, this new period drama takes a literary mystery — Cassandra Austen notoriously burning her famous sister Jane’s letters — and reimagines it as a fascinating, witty, and heartbreaking story of sisterly love, while creating in Cassandra a character as captivating as any Austen heroine.

Opening in 1830, sometime after Jane has died, the story finds Cassandra (Keeley Hawes, Bodyguard, Line of Duty) racing to see her friend, Isabella (Rose Leslie, Game of Thrones, Vigil), who is about to lose her home following her father’s death. Cassandra is ostensibly there to support her friend, but her real motive is to find a stash of private letters which, in the wrong hands, could destroy Jane’s reputation. On finding them, Cassandra is overwhelmed as she is transported back to her youth.

In flashback, we meet young Cassy (Synnove Karlsen, Bodies) and Jane (Patsy Ferran, Living) as they navigate the infatuations, family feuds, and dashed hopes that shaped their lives and laid the foundations for Jane’s unforgettable stories. Cassandra’s re-evaluation of her past eventually leads her to realize how blind she’s been to the real cause of Isabella’s heartache and distress. Finding a way to guide Isabella toward true happiness, Cassandra is finally able to understand and celebrate the sacrifices she chose to make for her brilliant sister, Jane.

The four-part drama also features Jessica Hynes (W1A), Mirren Mack (The Nest), Phyllis Logan (Downton Abbey), Kevin McNally (The Crown), Max Irons (Condor), Alfred Enoch (How to Get Away with Murder), Calam Lynch (Bridgerton), and Liv Hill (The Serpent Queen).

Miss Austen premieres in the US on Sunday, May 4, at 9pm ET, on PBS, with streaming available on PBS.org, the PBS app, and the PBS Masterpiece Prime Video Channel.

Dept. Q (UK)

Nordic noir goes British in this new new crime thriller series based on the “Department Q” crime novels by Danish author Jussi Adler-Olsen, with the action moving from Denmark to Scotland. In the series opener, DCI Carl Morck (Matthew Goode, The Offer, A Discovery of Witches), a brilliant cop but an awful human being, finds himself exiled to Department Q, the newly-formed cold case unit housed in the basement of the Edinburgh Police, after a shooting incident left a young PC dead and his partner paralyzed. Although its purpose sounds good, the new department is actually a PR ploy to distract the public from focusing on the failures of an under-resourced, failing police force — one that happens to be glad to see the back of Morck, since his razor-sharp sarcasm has made him no friends here.

More by accident than design, Carl starts to build a team for Dept. Q, a gang of waifs and strays who have everything to prove, including Akram Salim (Alexej Manvelov, Jack Ryan, Top Dog) and Rose (Leah Byrne, Call The Midwife, Nightsleeper). Akram is a former officer in the Syrian police force, who fled to Europe with his family when civil war broke out. And Rose was a top police cadet, whose mental health-related breakdown during her first year as a detective constable resulted in her demotion to a desk job.

When the stone-cold trail of a prominent civil servant who disappeared several years ago starts to heat up, Carl is back doing what he does best: rattling cages and refusing to take no for an answer.

Dept. Q, a Netflix Series, premieres globally on Thursday, May 29, exclusively on Netflix. (You can set a reminder for it now.)

Fyi, the first six “Department Q” novels have been adapted into Danish films, initially starring Nikolaj Lie Kaas and Fares Fares (The Keeper of Lost Causes, The Absent One, A Conspiracy of Faith, and Journal 64, aka The Purity of Vengeance), followed by Ulrich Thomsen (The Marco Effect, Boundless).
