Peacock released today the official trailer for The Tattooist of Auschwitz, the highly-anticipated event drama series featuring Oscar® nominee Harvey Keitel. Check it out.
“So, this is a love story.”
I could feel the waterworks about to start with just those words spoken in the trailer by Harvey Keitel (Bugsy, Smoke), who plays the older Lale in this drama about the real-life story of Jewish Holocaust survivors Lale and Gita Sokolov.
Based on Heather Morris’s best-selling novel The Tattooist of Auschwitz, the first title in her three-book “Tattooist of Auschwitz” series, the television event series stars Jonah Hauer-King (World on Fire, Little Women) and Anna Próchniak (Baptiste, The Innocents) as Lale Sokolov and Gita Furman.
Shortly after arriving at Auschwitz-Birkenau in 1942, Lale is made one of the tätowierer (tattooists), charged to ink identification numbers onto fellow prisoners’ arms. One day, he meets Gita when tattooing her prisoner number on her arm. They experience love at first sight, and so begins their courageous, unforgettable, and human story. Under constant guard from volatile Nazi SS officer Baretzki (Jonas Nay, Deutschland 83/86/89), Lale and Gita become determined to keep each other alive.
Around 60 years later, Lale (Harvey Keitel) meets novice writer Heather Morris (Melanie Lynskey, Yellowjackets, Mrs. America). Recently widowed, Lale finds the courage to tell her, and through her the world, his story. In recounting it to Heather, Lale, now in his 80s, faces the traumatic ghosts of his youth and relives his memories of falling in love in the most horrific of places.
The Tattooist of Auschwitz premieres in the US as a six-episode binge on Thursday, May 2, 2024, exclusively on Peacock. (The limited series will be available in the UK, Ireland, Italy, Germany, Austria, and Switzerland on the same date on Sky Atlantic and NOW.)
A production of Synchronicity Films in association with Sky Studios, The Tattooist of Auschwitz is executive produced by Claire Mundell, Synchronicity Films’ Adrian Burns and Mark Young, and Sky Studios’ Serena Thompson. It is directed and co-executive produced by Tali Shalom-Ezer (The Psychologist), and written and executive produced by Jacquelin Perske (The Cry), with associate producer Evan Placey (Soulmates) and Gabbie Asher (Call the Midwife) also serving as writers. Author Heather Morris served as the story consultant. The composers are two-time Oscar® winner Hans Zimmer (Dune) and Primetime Emmy® nominee Kara Talve (Prehistoric Planet). International distribution for the limited series is handled by NBCUniversal Global TV Distribution and All3Media International.
