Production is in full swing on the new adaptation of Agatha Christie’s Why Didn’t They Ask Evans? by multi-award winner Hugh Laurie (The Night Manager, House M.D.), who pens, directs, and appears in the mystery drama.

Joining the cast in special appearances are Academy Awards® winners Jim Broadbent (Iris, London Spy) and Emma Thompson (Sense and Sensibility, Years and Years), who play British aristocrats Lord and Lady Marcham.

The three-part drama stars Will Poulter (The Revenant) as local vicar’s son Bobby Jones, an honest and amiable young man, and Lucy Boynton (Bohemian Rhapsody) as Bobby’s friend, socialite Lady Frances “Frankie” Derwent, Lord and Lady Marcham’s clever and unflappable daughter with a flair for adventure.

The story follows Bobby and Frankie on their crime-solving adventure after they discover the crumpled body of a dying man who, with his last breath, gasps the cryptic question, “Why didn’t they ask Evans?” Armed only with a photograph of a beautiful young woman found in the dead man’s pocket, the two amateur detectives pursue, and are pursued by, the answer to the mystery.

Hugh Laurie appears in the adaptation as psychiatrist Dr. James Nicholson, the clinical director of the sanatorium near Merroway Court, the Bassington-ffrench estate.

Also in the cast are Maeve Dermody (The Secret Garden) as Moira, Nicholson’s troubled wife; Conleth Hill (Game of Thrones) as Dr. Alwyn Thomas, Bobby’s genial mentor; Daniel Ings (I Hate Suzie) as Roger Bassington-ffrench; Jonathan Jules (Small Axe) as Ralph “Knocker” Beadon, Bobby’s trusted friend and former shipmate; Miles Jupp (The Durrells) as Henry Bassington-ffrench, Roger’s brother; Amy Nuttall (Downton Abbey) as Sylvia Bassington-ffrench, Henry’s wife; Alistair Petrie (Sex Education) as Rev. Richard Jones, Bobby’s father; Paul Whitehouse (The Personal History of David Copperfield) as the landlord of a country inn; Morwenna Banks (A Confession) as Mrs. Cayman; and Joshua James (Black Mirror) as Dr. George Arbuthnot, Frankie’s long-suffering ally.

Commissioned by BritBox North America, Why Didn’t They Ask Evans? is produced by Mammoth Screen and Agatha Christie Limited. Endeavor Content will handle international sales outside of the UK, Ireland and the Americas.

Stay tuned for updates, including the North American premiere date for Why Didn’t They Ask Evans?.
