Two popular series from north of the border will be returning to US telly in the not-too-distant future: legal drama Burden of Truth and whodunit drama Frankie Drake Mysteries.
Burden of Truth
The CW premiered the first season of this legal drama back in July, and the US broadcast network will debut the show’s second season in summer 2019.
Burden of Truth is a serialized investigative drama about life-altering legal cases, the helpless plaintiffs searching for answers, and the lawyers fighting against the odds to deliver justice.
Kristin Kreuk (Smallville, Beauty and the Beast) stars as Joanna Hanley, a big city attorney who returns to her small hometown of Millwood to represent a Big Pharma company after their vaccine is suspected of causing the mysterious illness that affected several teen girls.
Costars include Peter Mooney (Rookie Blue), Star Slade (Frontier), and Nicola Correia-Damude (Shadowhunters: The Mortal Instruments).
Season One of Burden of Truth is currently streaming on The CW website. Stay tuned for updates about the Season Two premiere.
Frankie Drake Mysteries
Arts network Ovation is bringing both seasons of this internationally-popular mystery series to linear TV in the US.
Like a mash-up of Murdoch Mysteries (aka The Artful Detective) and Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries, Frankie Drake Mysteries is a colorful and entertaining whodunit series that follows the only female private detectives in 1920s Toronto.
The show stars Lauren Lee Smith (This Life, The Listener) as Frankie Drake, a gun-carrying, motorcycle-riding, Chinese green tea- and Turkish coffee-sipping co-owner of the Drake Detective Agency. Playing Frankie’s partner, Trudy Clarke, is Chantel Riley (Wynonna Earp, Suits).
Frankie and Trudy take on cases that explore a cross-section of the city, ones the police don’t want to touch. Assisting the detective duo are Morality Officer Mary Shaw (Rebecca Liddiard, Alias Grace) and morgue attendant Flo Chakowitz (Sharron Matthews, Taken).
Created by Carol Hay (Murdoch Mysteries, Shoot the Messenger) and Michelle Ricci (Murdoch Mysteries, Smallville), the series features Grace Lynn Kung (Mary Kills People), Steve Lund (Bitten), and Karen Robinson (Schitt’s Creek) in recurring roles, and Lucas Bryant (Haven), Laurence Fox (Inspector Lewis), and Melanie Scrofano (Wynonna Earp) in guest roles.
Season One of Frankie Drake Mysteries will premiere on Ovation in June 2019. A date for the debut of Season Two hasn’t been announced yet, so stay tuned for updates.
