Season 3 of hit crime drama Broadchurch begins filming soon, with several actors joining David Tennant, Olivia Colman, and others of the returning cast for the show’s final outing.
It’s bittersweet, isn’t it?
With Season 3 of the brilliant, BAFTA TV Best Drama award-winning Broadchurch beginning filming in Dorset this summer, excitement is already growing. But coupled with that announcement is the official word from series creator and writer Chris Chibnall that the third season is the last.
“This is the final chapter of Broadchurch. We have one last story to tell, featuring both familiar faces and new characters. I hope it’s a compelling and emotional farewell to a world and show that means so much to me.”
To fans of the show, too.
It wouldn’t be Broadchurch without David Tennant and Olivia Colman, so they are reprising their roles as DI Alec Hardy and DS Ellie Miller, as do Jodie Whittaker and Andrew Buchan as Beth and Mark Latimer (the parents of the young murder victim in Season 1).
Also returning are Arthur Darvill as Vicar Paul Coates, Carolyn Pickles as newspaper editor Maggie Radcliffe, and Adam Wilson as Ellie’s son, Tom.
Joining the cast of Broadchurch 3 in significant roles are National Television Award winner Julie Hesmondhalgh (Happy Valley, Coronation Street), BAFTA winners Georgina Campbell (Murdered by My Boyfriend, Tripped) and Charlie Higson (The Fast Show, Agatha Christie’s Marple), NTA nominee Sarah Parish (Atlantis, Mistresses), and Mark Bazeley (Home Fires, The Queen).
Series 3 centers on the police investigation of a serious sexual assault. Concurrently it explores the consequences of this crime — from the emotional cost to everyone involved, to the irreparable damage to friendships and relationships — as Broadchurch’s seaside community comes under the scrutiny of the reunited Miller and Hardy.
What we’ll see on screen is based on a year’s worth of research with Dorset-based organizations that specialize in working with victims of sexual assault, and advisement from members of the police whose specialty is investigating crimes of sexual violence. Additionally, the Shores (Dorset’s Sexual Assault Referral Centre) and Dorset Rape Crisis supported and advised Chibnall throughout his writing of the scripts for Series 3.
Co-produced by Kudos, Imaginary Friends, and Sister Pictures for ITV, the last-ever, eight-part series of Broadchurch is executive produced by Chris Chibnall (The Great Train Robbery, Torchwood) for Imaginary Friends, and Jane Featherstone (River, Humans) for Sister Pictures. Dan Winch (Indian Summers II, What We Did on Our Holiday) produces the final series, with Paul Andrew Williams (The Eichmann Show, Murdered by My Boyfriend), Daniel Nettheim (Doctor Who, Line of Duty), and Lewis Arnold (Prey, Humans) directing.
Filming starts this summer in Bridport, West Bay, and Clevedon, which featured as locations in Series One and Two of Broadchurch.
Stay tuned for updates about specific character and plot developments in Broadchurch 3., as well as which stateside channel (most likely BBC America) will screen it.
