In the holiday episode, Jenny Lee (Jessica Raine) and newly-married Chummy (Miranda Hart) spend their first Christmas with the other midwives and, of course, the nuns, of Nonnatus House. And there’s more than gift-giving going on, as they have an abandoned newborn to care for and its mother to search for. Jenny also tries to find the children of a local elderly vagrant woman, while Chummy tries to put on a children’s nativity play.

According to Pippa Harris, Executive Producer of Call the Midwife for Neal Street Productions,

“As the nights draw in and Christmas approaches, the residents of Nonnatus House pull together to celebrate the season in their own very special way. Christmas celebrates one particular birth, and so it’s especially fitting… to pay a visit to these much-loved characters, whose daily lives revolve around the joys and tribulations of childbirth.”

The holiday special airs at 7:30 PM Eastern on Sunday, 30 December, on PBS. (Check your local listings.) Here’s the trailer.

The second season of Call the Midwife consists of eight new episodes (up from six) and premieres in the U.S. on Sunday, 31 March 2013, on PBS.
