Add A Thousand Blows to your to-watch list, folks. It looks like it’s going to be a cracking series.

Hailing from Oscar® and BAFTA nominee Steven Knight (Peaky Blinders, Rogue Heroes, See), A Thousand Blows is set in the 1880s in London’s East End, and inspired by the true-life stories of a group of characters battling for survival there.

For the twelve-episode series, Knight has teamed up once again with BAFTA nominee Stephen Graham (Peaky Blinders, Boiling Point, Time), as well as with Malachi Kirby (Small Axe, Black Mirror, Roots) and Erin Doherty (The Crown, Les Misérables, Chloe), who make up the lead cast. The story revolves around their characters: Hezekiah (Kirby), Mary Carr (Doherty), and Sugar Goodson (Graham).

In the drama, Hezekiah and his friend, Alec (Francis Lovehall, Small Axe, Criminal Record), both from Jamaica, find themselves thrust into the vibrant and violent melting pot of post-Industrial Revolution London’s East End, where they get drawn into the criminal underbelly of the thriving illegal boxing scene. Here, they meet Mary Carr, the leader of the notorious all-female criminal gang known as The Forty Elephants, as they battle for survival on the streets. As Hezekiah sharpens his new skills, he comes up against Sugar Goodson, a criminal kingpin and dangerous boxer, and the two are soon locked in an intense rivalry that spills out way beyond the ring.

A Thousand Blows, a Hulu Original, premieres in the US on Friday, February 21, exclusively on Hulu. The series premieres on the same date globally as a Disney+ Original exclusively on Disney+.

The cast also includes Jemma Carlton (Lockerbie: A Search for Truth), Ned Dennehy (Peaky Blinders), Ziggy Heath (Harlots), Daniel Mays (Line of Duty), James Nelson-Joyce (C.B. Strike), and Jason Tobin (Warrior), amongst others.
