Sundance Now and AMC+ released today the official trailer for Sanctuary: A Witch’s Tale, a new fantasy drama series starring Elaine Cassidy.
Hmm, it appears scapegoating witches for crimes without evidence of wrongdoing on their part didn’t end when the witch hunting and witch trials in England did in the 18th century. In contemporary Sanctuary, witchcraft is real and witches have lived peacefully as valued members of society in this idyllic English town for hundreds of years. Until now.
Such is the backstory of Sanctuary: A Witch’s Tale, the new fantasy drama series based on V.V. James’s novel Sanctuary — hailed as “addictive,” “brilliant” and “captivating” by critics.
In Sanctuary, folks rely on the town’s resident witch, Sarah Fenn (Elaine Cassidy, No Offence, Acceptable Risk, The Ghost Squad), to solve their problems when conventional remedies have failed. But when local teen rugby star, Dan Whithall, dies tragically in an apparent accident, his death exposes a terrifying undercurrent of suspicion and fear toward Sarah and her teenage daughter, Harper (Hazel Doupe, Smother, You Are Not My Mother). The mother of the dead boy, Abigail (Amy de Bhrun, Hidden Assets, Line of Duty), once Sarah’s closest friend, is wracked with grief, so, to avenge her son’s death, she launches a modern-day witch hunt to get “justice,” no matter the cost.
Sanctuary: A Witch’s Tale, a Sundance Now Original Series, premieres in the US and Canada with two episodes on Thursday, January 4, 2024, exclusively on Sundance Now and AMC+, as well as their digital platforms in both countries. New episodes will drop weekly through February 8, 2024.
The cast of the seven-part drama series also includes Stephanie Levi-John (The Spanish Princess), Valerie O’Connor (Red Rock), Kelly Campbell (Vikings), and Stephen Lord (Penny Dreadful).
A production of Monumental Television (Mrs Sidhu Investigates, Harlots), Sanctuary: A Witch’s Tale is created and written by Debbie Horsfield (Poldark), and directed by Lisa Mulcahy (The Tourist) and Justin Molotnikov (Outlander).
