British actor Hugh Dancy is about to move from playing an FBI agent and serial killer hunter to a cult leader in the upcoming Hulu Original Series The Way.
With the Hannibal cast released from their contracts, following NBC’s cancellation of the cult-favorite drama after the current third and now final season’s first three episodes, Hugh Dancy (Elizabeth I, King Arthur) has signed to co-star in The Way, the ten-part, straight-to-series Hulu drama.
Thematically, The Way looks at what it means to choose between the life we live and the one we want, depicted through examining a family at the center of a controversial faith-based movement that is struggling with relationships, marriage, and power.
Dancy will play Cal Roberts, the charismatic cult leader of The Way who’s entangled with fellow members Sarah Cleary (Michelle Monaghan, True Detective) and her conflicted husband Eddie (Aaron Paul, Breaking Bad). As Cal strives to take the organization into its next generation, he will battle both personal demons and bold ambition.
The Way is based on a script by True Jack Productions’ Jason Katims (Parenthood, Friday Night Lights) and Michelle Lee (About a Boy), and created by Jessica Goldberg (Parenthood), who will pen the scripts. All three will executive produce the series, with Mike Cahill (Another Earth) directing the pilot.
The drama is set to start production in New York this September and premiere in 2016.
