First, a Happy Easter to everyone who celebrates it. Second, Happy Anniversary to BBC Two, which celebrates 50 years on air today. And third, I hope everyone who put on and attended Awesome Con DC had a rip-roaring good time.
This was my first “Con,” so I didn’t know what to expect aside from lots of cosplay, comic book vendors, and panel discussions. Well, there was less than I thought there would be, but considering this was just the second outing of Awesome Con DC, I’d say it was pretty good.
Folks did come dressed as their favorite characters, including the Tenth Doctor, along with his TARDIS, a Dalek, and K-9…
… a much younger version of the Eleventh Doctor, complete with fez and sonic screwdriver…
… and two Weeping Angels.
But the biggest attractions were the stars of some of our favorite films and television shows, including Sean Astin of Rudy,
… and Billie Piper, whose fans showed up in such massive numbers that there wasn’t enough room to accommodate them all during her two Q&A panels. 🙁
Fans young and old were over the moon that Billie Piper made her first appearance on the East Coast of the USA at Awesome Con DC, during which she offered up tidbits such as…
- If her double-life character in Secret Diary of a Call Girl
had to choose between life as the everyday Hannah or the high-class call girl Belle, she probably would have chosen Belle.
- While filming Penny Dreadful and the Doctor Who 50th anniversary special concurrently, costume, hair, and make-up were instrumental in her transitioning from playing the 1890s Irish immigrant Brona Croft to the 21st century Doctor Who companion Rose Tyler.
- Returning to “The Day of the Doctor“
as The Moment (in the form of Rose Tyler) rather than Rose Tyler was a nice change, given her many guest appearances in the series (post reboot Series 2) as Rose.
Plenty of other celebs were on hand over the Awesome Con weekend, including Dirk Benedict (Battlestar Galactica), Ron Glass (Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., Firely), Erin Gray (Buck Rogers in the 25th Century), Danai Gurira (The Walking Dead), Ernie Hudson (Transformers Prime, Ghostbusters), Phil LaMarr (Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Star Wars: The Clone Wars), and Jewel Staite (Stargate: Atlantis, Firely), and plenty of fun was had by all.
