British TV fans, your summer viewing is going to be heating up soon, because Golden Globe® winner Idris Elba is returning as DCI John Luther in Series 3 of the Emmy®-nominated Luther.
It’s been two years since we last saw Elba as the brilliant and tormented Luther, a fact not lost on Elba himself.
“I want to thank the fans for waiting so patiently for the new season. We’re thrilled to deliver it to you. Here comes John!”
Yay!
So, what does series creator and writer Neil Cross (Doctor Who, MI-5) have in store for us? More dark, intense, and pressure-filled stories. Not only does Luther have two conflicting crimes to investigate over the course of four new episodes, he also has a ruthless cop determined to bring him down. Crikey.
But all is not gloom and possible doom for Luther, for he meets vintage clothing shop staffer Mary Day (Sienna Guillory, Resident Evil, The Virgin Queen). Will he find love and happiness with her, or will Alice Morgan (Ruth Wilson, Small Island, Anna Karenina) go all psycho on him again?
As seen in the trailer, David O’Hara (Braveheart, The Tudors) guest stars. So, too, do Lucian Msamati (Game of Thrones, Death In Paradise) and Ned Dennehy (Parade’s End, Tyrannosaur).
And reprising their roles are Warren Brown (Inside Men, Criminal Justice) as DS Justin Ripley, Dermot Crowley (Babel, Bleak House) as DSU Martin Schenk, Michael Smiley (Ripper Street, Wire in the Blood) as Benny “Deadhead” Silver, and Nikki Amuka-Bird (Survivors, Five Days) as DS Erin Gray.
Luther: Series 3 premieres on BBC One in July (date TBA) on 2 July at 9PM local time, and on BBC America on 3 September at 10PM Eastern.
