Folks in the US will soon be able to watch the new Rebus series, as Viaplay announced today the premiere date for the show for viewers on this side of the pond.

Hooray! I’ve been waiting for this Rebus since it was announced two years ago, so I’m thrilled that the wait will soon be over. (Folks in the UK, and folks elsewhere with a VPN service, have been able to stream the show on BBC iPlayer since it launched back in May.)

Anyhoo, this Rebus series, the first TV adaptation in a couple decades (after the 2000-2007 series starring John Hannah and Ken Stott), reimagines the iconic character, John Rebus, as a younger Detective Sergeant. It stars Richard Rankin (Outlander, The Last Kingdom, Trust Me) as the titular Scottish cop.

Set in Edinburgh, the crime thriller follows Rebus as he is drawn into a violent criminal conflict that turns personal when his brother, Michael (Brian Ferguson, The Ipcress File), a former soldier, crosses the line into criminality. Rebus finds himself torn between protecting his brother and enforcing the law to bring Michael to justice.

Rebus premieres in the US as a six-episode binge on Thursday, November 7, exclusively on Viaplay partner channels, including Viaplay on Prime Video Channels.

The series is adapted from the internationally best-selling and award-winning “Inspector Rebus” novels by Sir Ian Rankin, which have sold more than 30 million copies and been translated into 36 languages.

Costars include Lucie Shorthouse (We Are Lady Parts), Thoren Ferguson (Payback), Caroline Lee-Johnson (Chef!), Stuart Bowman (Guilt), Amy Manson (The Nevers), Neshla Caplan (The Rig), and Noof Ousellam (Andor), amongst others.

Produced by Eleventh Hour Films for Viaplay, the series is written by Gregory Burke (‘71) and directed by Niall MacCormick (Complicit, The Victim) and Fiona Walton (Shetland, London Kills).
