Filming begins this week in Wales on Season 2 of Death Valley, which stars Timothy Spall (Wolf Hall, The Sixth Commandment) and Gwyneth Keyworth (The Trouble with Maggie Cole, Hidden).

Spall plays John Chapel, the nation’s once-beloved TV detective, who’s been living a reclusive life in the Welsh countryside, guilt-ridden for letting his career get in the way of his final months with his late wife, Elin. In Season 1, John gets dragged into the world of real sleuthing by Detective Sergeant Janie Mallowan (Keyworth), a copper who’s struggling to rise up the ranks. Despite their opposing instincts — Janie’s interested in procedure and building a watertight case while John’s captivated by character and motives — they make a fabulous, if not unlikely, mystery-solving duo.

Also returning for the second season of the comedic series are Alexandria Riley (The Pembrokeshire Murders) as Helen Baxter, Steffan Rhodri (House of the Dragon) as DCI Barry Clarke, Melanie Walters (Gavin & Stacey) as Yvonne Mallowan, and Rithvik Andugula (Extraordinary) as DC Evan Chaudhry.

The first season attracted and charmed loads of viewers on both sides of the pond. In the UK, its launch garnered the largest overnights audience for a new scripted show in five years, plus a strong 4.6 million viewer average across 28 days. On BBC One Wales, it was the biggest comedy so far this year, averaging 400,000 viewers. And on BritBox North America, it’s been the second most-watched show of 2025 to date in the first 30 days on the service.

Said Timothy Spall:

“I’m delighted that the show has been received so well, and audiences have embraced the warm and eccentric nature of John and Janie’s partnership. I’m really looking forward to revisiting this unlikely duo with the brilliant Gwyneth Keyworth as they take on more crime solving escapades in Wales.”

And Gwyneth Keyworth enthused:

“I’m so chuffed Janie and John get to bicker their way through some more deadly crime scenes. Thank you so much to everyone who watched and supported the show! I can’t wait to be back ‘corpsing’ with Timothy and the gang for series two!”

A production of BBC Studios Comedy in association with BritBox for BBC One and iPlayer, Death Valley is written and created by BAFTA-nominated Paul Doolan (Trollied), with additional material by Sian Harries. Season 2 will be directed by Simon Hynd and Claire Winyard. The producer is Nikki Wilson; the executive producers are Madeline Addy, Josh Cole, Paul Doolan, and Timothy Spall.

The series was ordered by Jon Petrie, Director of Comedy, and Nick Andrews, Head of Commissioning BBC Wales. Commissioning Editors are Seb Barwell for BBC Comedy and Paul Forde for BBC Wales. Additional funding support has been provided by the Welsh Government via Creative Wales. BBC Studios is handling global sales.

Season 2 will premiere in 2026 (date tba). Guest stars will be announced in due course.

Stay tuned for updates.
