The eighteenth season of the hit Canadian whodunit series, Murdoch Mysteries, featuring new cast member Paul Sun-Hyung Lee, is set for its US premiere.
We’re just a few days away from the Canadian and US premieres of Season 18 of Murdoch Mysteries, the fan-favorite whodunit series starring Yannick Bisson as Detective William Murdoch, a copper who employs innovative forensic techniques to solve some of early 20th-century Toronto’s most perplexing murders.
Joining the series this season is award-winning actor Paul Sun-Hyung Lee (Kim’s Convenience, Avatar: The Last Airbender, The Mandalorian), who marks his first foray into the world of period drama with Murdoch Mysteries. Lee plays Inspector Albert Choi, an Asian policeman who brings his own set of investigative skills and a whole new perspective to the team at the Toronto Constabulary’s Station House #4, including Chief Constable Thomas Brackenreid (Thomas Craig), Constables George Crabtree (Jonny Harris) and Henry Higgins (Lachlan Murdoch), Detective Llewellyn Watts (Daniel Maslany), and Chief Coroner Violet Hart (Shanice Banton). Arwen Humphreys returns as Margaret Brackenreid, as does Clare McConnell as Effie Newsome-Crabtree, Canada’s first female Crown Attorney.
Season 18 consists of 22 episodes — including the show’s milestone 300th episode! — that are full of “Murdochian” delights: a murder at a Charles Dickens convention; Murdoch acting as a bodyguard for a silent film star (Siobhan Murphy) and getting thrown into a cinematic adventure himself; foiling a theft of the world’s largest ruby; proving the veracity of a “Missing Link” skull found in Milton, Ontario; and a holiday episode celebrating the “misfits” and singletons. Episodes that root mysteries in the social issues of the time are also explored, such as: a worker’s strike at a factory; an early instance of low-income housing; competing public hydro projects; and immigrants trying to purchase land in the “paradise” of the wilds of Canada.
The 300th episode will see Detective Murdoch visit the UK to see his wife, Dr. Julia Ogden (Hélène Joy), as they celebrate their wedding anniversary.
Murdoch Mysteries: Season 18 premieres in the US on Monday, October 7, at 8pm ET, on Ovation TV — debuting day and date with the Canadian premiere on CBC.
The series, based on the works and characters created by Maureen Jennings in her popular “Murdoch Mysteries” novels, is CBC’s most-watched show and Canada’s top-rated long-running drama.
