Adapted from Elizabeth George’s New York Times best-selling “Inspector Lynley” crime novels, Lynley stars Leo Suter (Vikings: Valhalla, Sanditon, Victoria) as DI Tommy Lynley and Sofia Barclay (Ted Lasso, We Are Lady Parts, Defending the Guilty) as DS Barbara Havers — the beloved detective duo at the heart of the whodunits.

Tommy Lynley is a brilliant police detective but an outsider in the force, simply by virtue of his aristocratic upbringing. He is paired with Barbara Havers, a sergeant with a maverick attitude and a working-class background. With seemingly nothing in common and against all odds, the mismatched duo of Lynley and Havers — his brain and her spirit, his knowledge and her instincts — become a formidable crime-solving team, bonded by their desire to see justice done. It is through working side by side that they both find where they truly belong.

Costarring in Lynley is Daniel Mays (Magpie Murders, Line of Duty), who plays DCI Brian Nies, the astute, suspicious Senior Detective at Three Counties Major Incident Team. Nies’s aversion to Lynley is partly born of his own insecurities about class and partly because he knows he’s no longer the smartest person in the room.

The cast also includes Niamh Walsh (The English Game) as Helen Clyde, an estate agent and Lynley’s former Oxford classmate, whose romance with Lynley is sparked when their paths fatefully cross on a case; Michael Workeye (My Lady Jane) as tech specialist Tony Bekele; and Joshua Sher (Vera) as forensic scientist Simon St. James.

Currently filming in Ireland, the sophisticated four-part crime drama series will explore timely themes of gender, class, and ethics.

A project of Playground (Wolf Hall, All Creatures Great and Small), Colin Callender’s award-winning production company, Lynley is created, written, and executive produced by Steve Thompson (Vienna Blood, Sherlock), with Ed Bazalgette (Marie Antoinette, The Last Kingdom: Seven Kings Must Die) serving as lead director and Suzanne McAuley (Magpie Murders, Love/Hate) as series producer. David Stern and Colin Callender are the executive producers for Playground, with Robert Schildhouse, Stephen Nye, Jon Farrar, and Jess O’ Riordan the executive producers for BritBox, Kate Woods the executive producer for BBC Studios, and Sue Deeks the executive producer for the BBC.

Said author Elizabeth George, who serves as an executive producer on the series:

“I’m thrilled to see Thomas Lynley and Barbara Havers come to television again, especially through the participation of the BBC and BritBox and the production expertise of Playground. Watching my characters brought to life on television is a real celebration.”

Her “Inspector Lynley” novels have been translated into more than thirty languages and adapted into the BBC series, The Inspector Lynley Mysteries, which ran from 2001-2007 and is currently available for streaming on BritBox.

Lynley will premiere on BritBox in the US and Canada and on BBC iPlayer and BBC One in the UK (dates tba). The drama will be distributed internationally by BBC Studios.

Stay tuned for updates.
