Starz announced today that Minnie Driver is amongst ten new cast members joining the second season of the critically-acclaimed, Samantha Morton-led series The Serpent Queen.
Academy Award® nominee Minnie Driver (Good Will Hunting, Chevalier) joins The Serpent Queen in a recurring role as the infamous “Virgin Queen” Elizabeth I.
Also joining the second season cast are new series regulars Angus Imrie (Emma, Fleabag), Emma McDonald (Moonhaven, Low Rider), Stanley Morgan (I Used to Be Famous, The Sandman), and Philippine Velge (Station Eleven, Summer of 85). Joining in recurring roles are Rosalie Craig (1899, Macbeth), Isobel Jesper Jones (The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, The Bastard Son & The Devil Himself), Bill Milner (Son of Rambow, The Flatshare), Ashley Thomas (Them, 24: Legacy), and Alexandre Willaume (The Wheel of Time, 1899).
Based on Leonie Frieda’s best-selling book Catherine de Medici: Renaissance Queen of France, biopic-historical drama series The Serpent Queen tells the story of Catherine de Medici (Samantha Morton, Harlots, The Walking Dead, Rillington Place, The Last Panthers), who, against all odds, became one of the most powerful and longest-serving rulers in French history.
Minnie Driver plays Elizabeth I, the infamous “Virgin Queen,” a woman of style, wit, and experience who goes toe-to-toe with Catherine.
Angus Imrie plays Henry IV, the son of Antoine de Bourbon and Jeanne d’Albret. Henry appears uncivilized to those who are unobservant, but in reality he is quite an intellect.
Emma McDonald takes over the role of Rahima, who has grown in wit and confidence and assumed an important position in Catherine’s life.
Stanley Morgan plays Anjou, the younger brother of King Charles, who is non-conforming and capable of disruptive violence.
Philippine Velge plays Margot, Catherine’s eldest daughter. Margot is her mother’s polar opposite — incredibly charming, liked by all, and seeking the truth.
Rosalie Craig plays Jeanne d’Albret, the self-righteous and disapproving wife of Antonie de Bourbon.
Isobel Jesper Jones plays Edith, a protestant preacher to a group of loyal followers.
Bill Milner plays King Charles IX, the oldest son of Catherine de Medici, and the now King of France. Not a boy, but not quite a man, he is anxious to play king and get it right.
Ashley Thomas plays Alessandro de Medici, a man possessed with great charisma and beauty and is the object of desire.
Alexandre Willaume plays Montmorency, the wise and humorless Constable General of France. He is a loyal and serious servant of the king.
A production of Lionsgate Television and 3 Arts Entertainment for Starz, the series is written and executive produced by Justin Haythe (Revolutionary Road, Red Sparrow, The Lone Ranger). Francis Lawrence (“The Hunger Games” franchise) and Erwin Stoff (The Matrix, 13 Hours, Edge of Tomorrow) are also executive producers.
The Serpent Queen: Season 2 will premiere in 2024 (date tba). Stay tuned for updates.
