Select public TV stations across the US will be airing the 1996 TV special The Rolling Stones Rock and Roll Circus. Read on to find out if your station is amongst them.
The Rolling Stones, one of the greatest rock bands of all time, have been around since 1962. Back in 1968, a whopping 55 years before they released Hackney Diamonds — their first new studio album of original material in 18 years — the band headlined the TV special The Rolling Stones Rock and Roll Circus.
Filmed on a makeshift circus stage, the show brought aerialists, fire-eaters, and acrobats together with the day’s top rock talent, including The Who, Jethro Tull, Taj Mahal, Marianne Faithfull, The Rolling Stones, and The Dirty Mac, a supergroup featuring John Lennon, Eric Clapton, Keith Richards, and Mitch Mitchell of The Jimi Hendrix Experience.
Serving as both the show’s hosts and featured attraction, The Rolling Stones performed a six-song set that included “Jumpin’ Jack Flash,” “You Can’t Always Get What You Want,” and “Sympathy For the Devil.”
The special was supposed to air on the BBC, but the band opted to keep Rock and Roll Circus in the vaults for a variety of reasons, and the show wasn’t released commercially until October 1996.
Soon it will be shown on select public TV stations in the US.
