Technically, that’s worldwide minus the UK and Ireland, but still. Netflix has scooped up Marcella, the new British crime drama starring Anna Friel and premiering on ITV tonight.

Chalk up another Brit TV exclusive for Netflix.

The streaming giant and global TV network has picked up the exclusive worldwide streaming rights to Marcella, the first crime drama written specifically for the UK audience by Swedish writer/producer and BAFTA Awards nominee Hans Rosenfeldt, creator of the international hit Swedish/Danish crime serial The Bridge.

Anna Friel (Pushing Daisies, The Heavy Water War, aka The Saboteurs) leads the cast of Marcella, which includes Laura Carmichael (Downton Abbey), Nicholas Pinnock (Fortitude), Sinéad Cusack (Jekyll & Hyde), Harry Lloyd (Game of Thrones), Ray Panthaki (DCI Banks), Nina Sosanya (Last Tango in Halifax), and Norwegian actor Tobias Santelmann (Eyewitness).

Set in contemporary London, the eight-part series follows Marcella through her involvement in a serial killer case, where the murderer’s m.o. bears a striking resemblance to a spate of unsolved killings from a decade ago. It was at that time that Marcella had given up her fast-tracked police career to marry and devote her life to her family.

Her life is upended ten years later, when husband Jason (Pinnock) declares he no longer loves her and up and leaves her. Shocked, heartbroken, and isolated from her two children, Marcella returns to the Met’s Murder Squad and throws herself into work to try to hold herself together.

She wants back in on the serial killer case she had worked on a decade ago, as she has a hunch she wants to follow up on. It’s the same hunch she had years ago but couldn’t do anything about, given her pregnancy with her second child.

With the new set of unsolved murders, Marcella must work out whether the killer from ten years ago has reappeared or if there’s a copycat killer on the loose. She’s also suspicious about Jason’s motives for leaving her and ends up playing detective in her off-hours, as well.

Still in a psychologically fragile and vulnerable state, Marcella may or may not get the answers she’s seeking about the case or her marriage by throwing herself back into work. And it is this very work that could lead her into dangerous territory and even more heartache.

Co-created by Hans Rosenfeldt and Nicola Larder (The Tunnel), Marcella is a Buccaneer Media production for ITV. The series is executive produced by Buccaneer’s CEO Tony Wood, and directed by Charles Martin (Being Human), Jonathan Teplitzky (Broadchurch), and Henrik Georgsson (The Bridge).

Marcella premieres in the UK on ITV at 9 PM (local) tonight. Netflix begins streaming the series in all of its territories (except the UK and Ireland) on 1 July 2016.
