Right, then, Iain Glen fans. Before you know it, it will be time to swoon again, as the actor is set to lead the ensemble cast of the new epic drama Cleverman.
Scotsman Iain Glen (Game of Thrones, Breathless, Jack Taylor, The Bad Education Movie), winner of the Silver Berlin Bear Award at the 1990 Berlin International Film Festival, and one of the Downton Abbey cast members who brought home the 2013 Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama Series, is set to star in the new, epic genre drama Cleverman.
Set in the near future, Cleverman is a smart, sexy, and action-packed original drama that sees a group of non-humans battling for survival in a world where humans feel increasingly inferior to them, and want to silence, exploit, and kill them. Central to the drama is the story of two estranged Indigenous brothers who are forced together to fight for their own survival. Otherworldly creatures also emerge into this fragile and dangerous place.
Led by Glen, the series’ ensemble cast includes Golden Globe® nominee Frances O’Connor (The Missing, Mr Selfridge), Deborah Mailman (The Sapphires, Jack Irish), Hunter Page-Lochard (The Sapphires, East/West 101), Rob Collins (The Lion King) and Stef Dawson (The Hunger Games).
The 6 x 1-hour Cleverman is based on an original concept by Ryan Griffen (Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries), and being brought to US television through the partnership of Red Arrow International and SundanceTV in 2016.
Cleverman is set for production in Sydney, Australia, and is being produced by Goalpost Pictures Australia (The Sapphires) and New Zealand’s Pukeko Pictures (Thunderbirds Are Go) for ABC TV Australia, in co-production with SundanceTV and Red Arrow International, and with the assistance of Screen Australia, Screen NSW, and the New Zealand Screen Production Grant.
Wayne Blair, director of the Australian box office hit The Sapphires and the upcoming film Septembers of Shiraz, is the lead director, with acclaimed director, writer, actress, and performer Leah Purcell (Lantana) also directing.
Michael Miller (The Doctor Blake Mysteries) is the script producer, and also serves as writer along with Jon Bell (Black Comedy). The producers are Rosemary Blight and Lauren Edwards for Goalpost Pictures, Ryan Griffen, and Angela Littlejohn for Pukeko Pictures, with executive producers Sally Riley, Kylie du Fresne, Ben Grant, Martin Baynton, Adam Fratto, Jan David Frouman, and Amelie Kienlin.
The Oscar®-winning Weta Workshop (Lord of the Rings trilogy, The Hobbit trilogy, Avatar), through their association with Pukeko Pictures and together with Jacob Nash (Bangarra Dance Company), are providing the creature design. Park Road Post Production (The Hobbit films) is providing picture, visual effects, and sound post production services.
Red Arrow International is distributing the drama worldwide, and the show will have its market launch at MIPCOM in October.
